Sewing Skills Course – Week One
Last week we started on the Simplicity Learn to Sew Bag workshop and are delighted to be sponsored by Simplicity patterns again. We are making design C from the Simplicity pattern 2164 (middle bag in the picture) over 3 weeks, and the girls are learning various pattern making techniques during the lessons and then completing tasks at home. The girls have chosen some great fabrics for their bags from spots to birds and London scenes to French recipes!
We started the workshop by talking through the information on the pattern envelope and how to understand the amount of material needed. We then discussed the pattern piece numbers needed for bag C and, after cutting out of the tissue paper, they were placed on the fabric and cut out. There are a couple of ways to cut the triangle markings. They can be cut into the seam allowance or cut outwards (which Ann-Marie finds easier!) Double triangles can be cut outwards too. We finished the workshop by starting to transfer the tailor marks from the pattern onto the fabric with tailor tacks. For homework this week, the girls are going to cut out the lining pieces and put all their tailor tacks into their outer and lining fabrics.
Check back next week to see how the girls get on with the next stage, making up the bag.
